Can a Nurse Work From Home?

Your immediate reaction to this could be no way, how could a nurse whose job is to care for patients do this remotely? Well it isn’t only possible – there are a few avenues that nurses who want the flexibility and work-life balance that telecommuting offers can pursue.

One of the biggest areas for these opportunities comes from telehealth jobs. In these positions, RNs provide over the phone triage and disease management services. Patients can call in with health questions, while nurses make outbound calls to patients with chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes. Many of these opportunities are offered by traditional medical employers.

Another work from home opportunity for nurses is medical transcription. The main responsibility of this role is to transcribe recordings made by doctors or other healthcare professionals into medical reports, correspondence or other administrative documents. Nurses who work in the medical transcription field can either obtain assignments from medical transcription service providers or become independent contractors and market their skills to local doctors and medical groups.

A third option for those inclined to work from home is case management. These nurses evaluate patients’ disability claims and provide early intervention in the medical and return-to-work management processes for injured employees. Working with patients, physicians, physical therapists and occupational therapists, nurses plan and evaluate the patient’s care to achieve cost-effective outcomes and optimal medical improvement. There is a lot of opportunity with insurance companies for this job.

If telecommuting is your goal – call ATC. We can assist you in achieving this.
